    Hi Benson,
Someone has just sent me some pictures of what looks like an Old Town canoe with closed gunwales. The serial number appears to be 7599. Any information you can provide would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,

Hi Mike, the Old Town canoe with serial number 7599 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, spruce decks, spruce thwarts, spruce seats, spruce outside finish rails, a keel, and a painter ring. It was built between October, 1907 and March, 1908. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 25th, 1908. The Carleton canoe with this serial number has no keel and is 18 feet long. Scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Pictures might help if you still aren't sure. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

The information from a prior request at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/11964/ has the build record information. Feel free to reply there if you have other questions.
